The traditional design of the candlestick is here completely transformed by the search for dynamism and contrast. Starting from the asymmetrical base, a spiral movement envelops the object, accentuated by the opposition between ascending and descending elements. Opposing forces seem to clash, shuddering through the silver bronze in a vigorous, permanent counter-movement.
JUSTE-AURÈLE MEISSONNIER (1695-1750): King's silversmith working at the Gobelins, he succeeded Jean Berain as architect and draughtsman of the king's chamber and cabinet, and became one of the leading ornamentalists propagating the asymmetrical rocaille style. The son of a silversmith from Aix-en-Provence who had settled in Turin, Meissonnier moved to Paris around 1715. An artist of many talents - he was a medal engraver, chaser, goldsmith, sculptor, draughtsman, decorator, painter and architect - he held the prestigious position of Draughtsman to the King's Chamber and Cabinet from 1726. Above all an inventor of form, he created a marvelous and surprising universe on paper, where asymmetry triumphed, and his innovative ideas contributed to the triumph of the rocaille taste in Paris in the 1730's. He disseminated his designs through engraving - for the most part collected in a work published under the title OEuvre de Meissonnier - entrusting the realization to others who worked under his close control.
