In the style of Juste-Aurèle Messonnier
Pair of rocaille candlesticks
Finely chiseled and gilded bronze
Dimensions: H. 23 (cm.)
Important pair of rocaille style candlesticks or torches. The barrel presents an asymmetrical ternary cycle alternating a decoration of shell and plants, each side is different. The binet has a jagged rocaille decoration. The particularity here is the quality of the gilding in two tones: pink and warm gold, making it possible to accentuate the burnished and matte surfaces and therefore to reflect the light.
An iconic model
This torch was made in the second part of the 19th century when eclecticism triumphed. Model made after the drawings and creations of the great Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier. Architect, designer, goldsmith, ornamentalist, he was one of the greatest theorists of French rocaille. His works created by himself, under his direction or freely inspired by his drawings can be found throughout the world. Our torch is based on a model executed around 1735-1740 due to the asymmetrical nature of the design. A model close to the 18th century in its way is kept in New York, at the Metropolitan Museum.
