Elegant pair of candelabras from the early 19th century, depicting Psyche and Eros (Amour, Cupid) during the first moments of their seduction.
Each figure stands beside a magnificent torchiere forming the base of the four arms of light. The triangular base with curved sides is chased with oil lamps, olive branches, lotuses and dolphins. The canted sides end in claw feet.
Superb original gilding with perfectly chased matte and glossy finishes, these candelabra can be attributed to Claude Galle. The gilding, characteristic of the Master, but also the design and proportions of the figures. As Ottomeyer and Pröschel noted in Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I: "Claude Galle's specific body modeling style is characterized by a Mannerist elongation of proportions and an effort to express emotion in the posture and expression of the face".
The expression of feelings is subtly transcribed, and we sense the modesty and attraction of mythology's most famous lovers. Psyche, gazing at the butterfly in her hands, evokes the purity of the soul and innocence. Love, spying on her, hiding the magic arrow behind his back, unsure whether to use it.
Very fine condition, with its magnificent original mercury gilding.
Minor restoration to the base of one light arm.
Empire period, between 1810 and 1820.
