Pair of torchlight candlesticks in gilded bronze (chiseled bronze) in matte and shiny. Baluster-shaped stem model on a palmette base, vase decorated with palmettes and arrows. Our candle holders are entirely made of bronze (no brass part) and composed of 8 independent parts assembled on a threaded rod. Empire period work by Claude Galle.
Claude Galle (1759-1815), bronze maker and foundry-engraver, received master in 1786 and active on rue Vivienne, supplied the Crown Furniture Guard under Louis XVI but also and especially under the Empire. In particular, it makes deliveries to the châteaux of Trianons, Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud, Compiègne and the Palais des Tuileries.
This model is distinguished by its sobriety as well as excellent quality of execution. Additional qualitative detail, the underside is covered in original green leather designed to allow the candlesticks to be placed on varnished mahogany furniture without scratching it.
It is interesting to compare the productions of Claude Galle and to understand that his creations were combinations of individual elements assembled with variations to constitute different models. A few months ago we sold another model by Claude Galle of which we recognize very similar elements and initiations which make it the signature of this great bronze maker.
Rare collector's model, this version is less common and less known in Claude Galle's production
