Pair of Empire candelabra in chiseled and gilded bronze. Model composed of a large torch onto which 3-light sconces are grafted. Base with large palmettes, water leaves arranged around the baluster-shaped stem and gadroons which adorn both the circular feet and the vase-shaped bobeches. Empire period by Claude Galle, supplier to the Garde Meuble Impérial.
A model created at the beginning of the 19th century, in the years 1806-1807, this model of torch candlesticks is a creation by Claude Galle who delivered 17 pairs between 1806 and 1807 for the apartments of princes at the Palais de Fontainebleau. National furniture also keeps some in its collections (see Time, Fire, Light - the bronzes of national furniture, and Clocks and furniture bronzes entered under the First Empire by Jean Pierre Samoyault). Our candelabras are the evolved version of the basic torches, with the arm with three lights which are grafted onto it. Claude Galle (1759-1815), bronze maker and foundry-engraver, received master's degree in 1786 and was active on rue Vivienne, supplied the Crown Furniture Guard under Louis XVI, but also and especially under the Empire. In particular, he makes deliveries to the châteaux of Trianons, Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud, Compiègne and the Palais des Tuileries.
This model is distinguished by its great sobriety as well as excellent quality of execution. In particular, they are composed of 26 independent parts (a sign of the quality of the model), entirely in matte and shiny mercury-gilded bronze (bronze only, no brass parts).
Excellent condition: gilding remarkably preserved, without wear, 6 bobeches are attached, to complete the sconces.
Height: 51cm
