This cast silver necklace features ten round links set with a large faceted stone surrounded by two smaller ones. They are arranged on either side of a stone cross, known as a Saint Lo cross, featuring four cabochons on an openwork background decorated with fleurons set with small stones. Below the cross is a pendant set with a round stone. The reverse of each element is adorned with a radiating, gadrooned motif. Today, the necklace has a chain, but in the past it was worn with a small velvet ribbon fastened on each side by a small link, which is still in place.
This lovely necklace is typical of the finest 19th-century goldsmiths in Normandy, and is made of solid silver, set with sparkling faceted white stones. The control mark is a boar's head, but we were unable to identify the master mark.
First half of the 19th century.
