Angelo Minghetti Manufacture (Bologna, 1821-1885)

Pen holder decorated with heads of Renaissance figures in polychrome majolica. Dimensions: L: 24 cm x W: 7 cm. It bears the manufacturer's "AMF" monogram under the base. Some chips are present around the edge.

Angelo Minghetti began his career as a ceramist in 1848 in the ‘Bucci d’Imola’ factory, where he restored pieces from the 16th century. He then founded in 1858 in Bologna, the city where he had studied at the School of Fine Arts, a family business, Ceramische Artistiche. In 1869, he presented his first creations at the Industrial Exhibition, where they received a Silver Medal, announcing his future national and international success. He was notably rewarded with a silver medal in Rome in 1883 and in Turin in 1884, a gold medal in Vienna in 1873 and in Milan in 1881, as well as an Honorable Mention in Paris in 1878.

His productions, often confused with ancient majolica from the Renaissance period, follow in the wake of the sculptor Lucca della Robbia. Angelo Minghetti's busts and decorative objects, characterized by a very pronounced glaze, define his artistic identity. His works met with great success at the end of the 19th century, which earned him recognition as the “felice innovator of Italian ceramic art” at the Turin exhibition in 1884.
