Paul MIGNON (1930 - 2012) joined the Faïencerie de Longwy as an apprentice decorator in 1945. He was only 15 years old. Two years later, he won first place in the Concours National d'Apprentis-Décorateurs. Following this success, the company entrusted him with new responsibilities.
In 1947, at the age of 17, he signed his first limited series creations. However, he continued to anonymously produce numerous pieces for tableware and advertising within the factory. He decorated both enamels and earthenware.
In 1952, he was appointed Curator of the Musée Privé des Faïenceries.
In 1965, he was awarded the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF).
The large dish we present belongs to one of the limited series mentioned above.
It bears the design title "Montgolfière" and the number 16 of a probable 150-unit series.
The design is extremely fine and the composition of the scene very balanced.
The hot-air balloon stands out against a pristine sky. The middle ground features a curtain of trees in shades of gray, while three figures in the foreground are dressed in the same colors as on the balloon. The location could be the Jardins de la Folie Titon, owned by M. Réveillon at the time of the Montgolfier brothers' first experiments.
The back of the dish contains all the information needed for identification: name of the decoration, number of the piece in the limited edition series, stamp of the Atelier d'Art de la Manufacture de Longwy with the holly-leaf coat of arms and the signature of Paul Mignon.
The dish is large, 36.5 cm in diameter, with two holes for hanging.
It's ready to hang in your home!
