Superb large pot holder with an interpretation of the Japanese polychrome bird design on an ivory background from the Gien faience factory, circa 1860.
Slightly gadrooned lotus shape with serrated edges
Base in plain dark-blue cut earthenware known as "gros bleu" from Gien, made in imitation of Chinese bases in carved wood.
On one side, a superb bird strung among flowers; on the sides, insects such as butterflies and flies; and on the other, a superb bouquet of apple blossoms.
On the outside, the top edge is trimmed with a frieze in shades of yellow, blue and turquoise.
Inside, a fresco of Moorish-style decorative elements in the form of reserves that follow the curves of the notched border.
