This beautiful earthenware plate is decorated in the center with a Chinese figure commonly known as "The Hunchback of Saint Ferjus". It was created in La Tronche, near Grenoble, by an earthenware worker from Claude Potié's workshop.
To describe our plate, we can't replace Claude Ferradou, who described one of its little sisters during a conference at the Académie Delphinale:
"With his hidden eye, he watches over his garden of foliage and small flowers, with its two manganese rocks, under a fluttering butterfly, surrounded by the double circular border that closes it. With the other, always open, he observes from the side, without seeming to, the World that is in turmoil and has changed so much since he first looked at it...
He was born a long time ago, one morning in 1772, on a bed of milk-colored raw enamel without poncifics, from a few quick brushstrokes by an earthenware worker in Claude POTIE's workshop in La Petite Tronche, just before his passage to the big fire."
The closure of La Tronche's last earthenware workshop is dated November 30, 1830, the day Antoine POTIE (1774-1859), master earthenware maker who had taken over the factory from his uncle François in 1812, left.
In very good condition, with a few small enamel chips around the rim.
