Rare large Italian majolica vase with polychrome decoration of floral and plant arabesques on a blue background, framing two medallions representing on one side a helmeted head (a Roman soldier); on the other the profile portrait of a young woman, workshop of Maestro Domenico* in Venice (around 1560-1580), from Italy, from the 16th century.
This vase is in good general condition and is of exceptional quality, very rare due to its size (37.5 cm high). Old exhibition label at a salon on the bottom.
A copy of a vase from the same workshop is kept at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore (USA).
Please note: the neck has been restored (bronze neck), some enamel defects on the body, slight chips and wear from time, look carefully at the photos. * Domenego de Dona di Bethi, known as Domenico da Venezia,
born between 1520 and 1525 in Venice and died between 1569 and 1574 in the same city, was an Italian ceramist and majolica painter, active in the third quarter of the 16th century in the Republic of Venice. Domenico da Venezia was a ceramist, and in particular a majolica painter: he is also considered one of the most important of his generation. He is part of the Venetian pictorial tradition, particularly Mannerist, with characters immersed in a landscape. His palette is dominated by yellow, with the use of green and blue. His production is notably characterized, for his period of artistic maturity, by the decline of drawing in favor of chromatic contrasts and shading in order to represent forms. Dimensions
