    Rare large Bordeaux fine earthenware vase signed Jules Vieillard & Cie*, with Japanese relief decoration of apple blossom branches wrapped around the vase on a green background, base and border with stylized friezes, standing on a carved wood tripod stand with claw feet, circa 1878-1885 19th century.
    This vase is in good condition and of exceptional quality. Signed and numbered on the bottom.
    This is a rare and exceptional model, of which only two are known to date. Indeed, a similar vase of the same dimensions (with a bronze mounting and set on a wooden saddle) is currently in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux (see last photo, Ref inventaire 2016.4.1.1). A preparatory drawing is also preserved at the Museum (Ref 2007.7.2). This vase model is shown in the Catalogue de l'Exposition Universelle de Nice (1883-1884) (Thanks to M. Tornier, Attaché de Conservation Collections XIXème-XIXème siècles au MADD de Bordeaux, for this information).

    Please note: a small chip on a flower petal, a few light chips on some petals, a firing crack of approx. 5cm visible on the neck, some enameling flaws, light scratches on the body, some soiling (especially on the inside), the marble of the saddle has been broken and glued back, wear and tear, please see photos for details.

    * J. Vieillard & Cie:
    is an earthenware manufacturer in Bordeaux, located on the Quai de Bacalan. It succeeded the David Jonhston factory in 1845. It was run by Jules Vieillard until his death in 1868: his sons Albert and Charles, who had shared management with their father since 1865, took over until the company closed in 1895. Long before the arrival in the 1870s of Amédée de Caranza (1840-1912), artistic director who, in addition to his unbridled inventiveness, brought his taste for Persian art and his deep understanding of Japanese graphic arts to the factory taken over by Jules Vieillard's sons, the Bordelais faïencerie was already creating pieces marked by a taste for an oriental fantasy, with its exotic landscapes, palm trees, weeping willows, junks, fabulous birds and dragons. Other designs are inspired by the prestigious porcelain imported from China in the 18th century by the East India Company.
