The glaze is relatively matt with a satin sheen
Eugene Schopin used a white clay after firing. It was thus useless to enamel it to pose the decoration and this one was carried out directly on the cookie. The process claimed 3 firings: that of the cookie, that of the colors, then that of the transparent lead glaze. The white clay being refractory, the first firing could be done at high temperature.
The ceramics of the Schopin workshop obtained with this process present sumptuous bouquets of flowers and the metallic oxides arranged with a brush in thin layers give after firing colors of a great transparency.
Unsigned vase (underneath a decoration number) probably made around 1874 when E. Schopin obtained a bronze medal at the exhibition of the Union Centrale des Beaux-Arts. On this occasion Adrien Dubouché (great art collector) wrote some encouraging lines to E. Schopin: "You are a great artist. Schopin: "You are a fantasist who dreams of everything, who touches everything, you have a future because your enamel is fine, your pottery is solid, your bouquets smell good, redouble your efforts, give yourself over to the fever"!
