André Dignimont is a French painter, illustrator, caricaturist, theatre designer, engraver and lithographer born in Paris in 1891. He also played in several films, notably in Donne-moi tes yeux, where he played his own role under the direction of Sacha Guitry.
André Dignimont devoted himself exclusively to works on paper, disdaining, with rare exceptions, painting on canvas.
He began his career as a cartoonist and caricaturist in satirical newspapers such as Le rire, Le sourire, etc.
He was quickly recognized for his sense of placement, and for a style that was both elliptical and evocative. A member of the Salon d’Automne, he also exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries, as well as at the Salon de l’Araignée. He renewed the art of illustration, by the use of vaporous colors highlighted by a clever use of the whites of the paper.
His evocation of the people of the milieu, and of prostitution that he treats without complacency but with poetry is particularly appreciated.
Well known in literary circles, he was chosen as an illustrator by Colette (Mitsou, l’Ingénue libertine) and by Galtier-Boissière (La bonne vie).
He died in Paris in 1965.
