The angels of the Apocalypse

circa 1880

Dimensions: 17 x 13 cm, framed 25 x 20 cm

Technique: Graphite pencil, watercolor and gouache on paper

Mentioned in the Book of Revelation, the three angels, messengers of God, have the mission of announcing to believers the arrival of the end of times. Each of them plays a distinct role. The first announces the eternal Gospel, while the second informs the faithful of the fall of Babylon. The third, finally, plays the role of a warner, warning against temptation and exhorting us to remain faithful to God.

Contemplating the sun setting in a mysterious blue mist, the three angels turn their backs on us. With the Apocalypse announced, they face the destiny of humanity, which only God can arbitrate.
