Charles Louis Clérisseau is a formidable painter, designer and architect. Prize of Rome in 1746 he contributed to the birth of the "antique" taste which then gave rise to neoclassicism (Louis XVI...). Highly appreciated by the great European courts, Catherine II purchased numerous drawings by Clérisseau today at the Hermitage Museum. He also made a model for the Virginia Capitol at the request of Thomas Jefferson. Also the Château de Rastignac which inspired the White House.
An exhibition was dedicated to him in 1996 at the Louvre.
