Watercolor signed L. Timmermans* depicting a seascape, with fishing boats at the entrance to a harbor, the steeple visible in the background, most likely in Normandy or Northern France (perhaps Rouen?), including two boats from Concarneau (Brittany), in a late 19th century gilded wood frame.
This watercolor is in good condition, as is its frame, under glass. Signed lower left.
Please note: a few light stains on the paper, slight wear and tear, see photos.
* Louis Etienne Timmermans (1846-1910)
Belgian painter of landscapes, waterscapes, seascapes and watercolors. He studied at the Brussels Academy, then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became a professor. He exhibited Breton, Norman and Dutch seascapes at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, winning an honorable mention in 1904. Specializing in seascapes and harbor themes, he used great detail to enliven his landscapes. He worked mainly in the ports of the English Channel and the North Sea, and also travelled around Brittany from Saint-Servan to Camaret and from Paimpol to Lorient to renew his sources of inspiration.
