Jeanne GOUY
(Active between 1890 and 1904)
Pastel
Signed lower right "Jeanne Gouy"
66 x 82 cm (83 x 100 cm with the frame)
Jeanne Gouy was a pupil of the academic painter Jules Machard. The latter was known for his qualities as a portrait painter. He also painted nude women several times, whose beauty he visibly admired, notably a large Angelic nude attached to the rock exhibited at the Salon of 1869.
In our painting, we also feel here a real sensitivity and a delicacy that shows a respect or even an admiration for the woman's body. There is indeed no vulgarity in this nude: the forms are beautiful but shown without ostentation, with lightness and innocence.
Jeanne Gouy exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1891 to 1900 pastels representing women in their interior (La femme aux iris, Petite fille au livre, La lettres...) and in 1891 she exhibited a painting entitled "Etude au pastel ".
Here is represented a young red-haired woman who poses breasts, leaning near a mirror and a pretty blue drape. This is undoubtedly a beautiful study from a model.
