Superb costume study of Ballets Russes by Léon Bakst (1866-1924) dated 1919.
This painting was created by Léon Bakst, painter, illustrator, but also costume designer for the Ballets Russes from 1909 to 1921. He created costumes of oriental and ancient inspiration as shown in this study presenting a Persian costume for Aladdin or The Wonderful Lamp. This study was produced for the journal by Georges-Gabriel Thenon (Rip).
The work was created with gouache and graphite on laid paper. It comes from the collection of the family of Armand-Albert Rateau, the stamp of which appears on the reverse of the assembly with the inventory number.
The work is signed "Bakst" in the lower right part.
The painting is sold with its original frame decorated with mirrors.
A second painting (Archer costume study) painted by Bakst of the same frame, size and provenance is proposed, this could constitute a magnificent pair.
