Superb costume study for Russian ballets by Léon Bakst (1866-1924) signed and dated 1911.
This painting was produced by Léon Bakst, painter, illustrator, but also costume designer for the Ballets Russes from 1909 to 1921. He created costumes of oriental and ancient inspiration as shown in this study presenting an archer's costume for the ballet Le Martyr of San Sebastian.
The work was created with gouache and graphite on laid paper. It comes from the collection of the family of Armand-Albert Rateau, the stamp of which appears on the reverse of the assembly with the inventory number.
The work is signed "Bakst" in the lower right part.
The painting is sold with its original frame decorated with mirrors.
A second painting (Aladdin's costume study) painted by Bakst of the same frame, size and provenance is offered, this could make a wonderful pair.
