Exceptional large format gouache signed ELLIS ROWAN (authentic) perfect condition
Ellis Rowan also made a series of illustrations on birds, butterflies and insects, born July 30, 1848 Melbourne, colony of New South Wales
Ellie Rowan painted most of her Queensland paintings indoors, she always worked at night to draw the plants, which she had collected during her travels. On the one hand, Ellis was a quick and direct painter who made her botanical paintings outdoors, usually without an underlying pencil drawing. She painted and traveled with her curiosity and personal interests and she had no intention of becoming a serious botanical illustrator. She wrote of her Queensland paintings: "The collection is painted with the intention of showing the general public how flowers grow in their environment. Although they are all botanically correct, you cannot, in one drawing, make a picture of the flower and also show it scientifically drawn in sections which is an entirely different study.
She wanted to make artistic compositions, usually in close-up. The colourful and vibrant flora she painted were not conventionally placed but placed in the varied native habitats, extending beyond the frame of the painting. It is said that her composition was influenced by Thornton's Temple of Flora. Ellis would add insects and even snakes to her works like some of Thornton's artists, for dramatic effect.
Declaring herself a self-taught painter, Ellis combined traditional watercolour techniques with opaque paints which she used to illustrate detail.
    Plants:
For today's botanists, Ellis Rowan's paintings have limited scientific value because they lack the essential details needed for botanical illustrations. However, these drawings of flora are precise and clear enough to help people identify most of the plants she drew. Although Ellis admitted that she knew very little about plants, she maintained her passion and love for discovering the botanical world, drying many specimens as she collected them.
Early in her career, the tendency was to represent the flower or fruit as an isolated part or branch, but later in her career there was a shift that tended to macerate the plants in their own environment rather than in a studio-like space. Ellis created her botanical world rather than painting every detail of her observations.
