A well-known figurative artist on the Lyon scene, as well as nationally and internationally, Jacques Poncet (1921-2012) had a remarkable mastery of luminous, lush beauty. Jacques Poncet was spotted in the late 1950s by the great Parisian gallery owner Pierre Loeb, who presented illustrious artists such as Picasso, Miro, Kandinsky and Chagall, and in the 1960s joined Léger, Manessier, Tal Coat, Da Silva and Zao Wou Ki on the walls of the Galerie des Arts. This recognition was institutionalized in 2000 with the inclusion of four of his paintings in the modern and contemporary art collection of the Musée de Villefranche-sur-Saône.
This was followed by numerous exhibitions in influential galleries in Lyon and Paris for this key figure of the Ecole Lyonnaise.
In the 1950s, Jacques Poncet's painting was still abstract, in tune with the times. But his art soon became figurative. Through his five main themes, he explores his subjects over fifty years of powerful, colorful painting: the female nude, urban landscapes, trees, the sea and the self-portrait.
Nature, the sea, the sky and the elements are a constant source of inspiration for the artist. Jacques Poncet himself writes on this subject: "At first I'm attracted by landscapes, but very quickly water, fire (I make many drawings after flames), then trees and clouds interest me in themselves for their intimate cadence. I'm slowly discovering the rhythmic identity of things."
The critics of the time all hailed the "power" and "movement" of these brilliant, luminous and accomplished series, whose "colored masses" recall Cézanne's handwriting. "The critic René Déroudille commented in the early 1960s: "Landscapes (...) abandon their practical truth to make way for a torrent of force and color, in which the painter's sensations are expressed without excess (a very Lyonnais nuance).
