Beautiful gouache, a street scene in Venice near a well in the center of the courtyard or square.
A beautiful scene and, above all, the well that the painter shows us in his work wells were vital for the Venetians...and the cats.
Around the beginning of the 13th century, Venice acquired a unique type of well. The simple use of groundwater proved too complex, so sand was used as a filtering base to collect rainwater.
These wells were created by the Pozzéri family, members of the masons' guild. In 1858, the Austrians conducted a census of the city's 6046 private wells, 180 public wells and 556 underground water points.
Under every palace, campi and piazza in Venice, and wherever space was available, the Venetians built large water reservoirs, with watertight walls coated with clay, and later with terracotta.
Around 600 wells remain
