Jean VYBOUD (La Terrasse 1872-1944 Paris)

    Woman at prayer, 1903.
    28 x 21 cm (image); 62 x 46 cm (sheet)

    Bibliography:
    - Guy de Maupassant on Pont-Aven, quoted in D. Wildenstein, Gauguin, A Savage in the Making, Catalogue raisonné of the Paintings, Milan, 2002.

"A proud and wild region, still shrouded in superstition... You only have to set foot there to experience the life of yesteryear" (Guy de Maupassant on Pont-Aven, quoted in D. Wildenstein, Gauguin, A Savage in the Making, Catalogue raisonné of the Paintings, Milan, 2002, vol. II, p. 365).

After training in the studios of Gustave Moreau and François Flameng, Jean Vyboud specialized in engraving, particularly the burin technique. He excelled in reproducing the works of old masters such as Rubens, Greuze and Botticelli, and exhibited his creations at the Salon from the age of twenty. In 1903, he presented an engraving entitled 'Prière', which seems to correspond to this one. Printed by the Société des Amis de l'eau-forte in Paris, this trial proof can be identified by the dry stamp (Lugt. L.113). The Society's proofs, printed in editions of one hundred, were reserved exclusively for its members. A similar version of this etching is preserved at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève (n°E 2019-0363-004).
