    BIBLIOGRAPHY

Abraham Tancrède, the painter who captured the Mayenne (a historical figure from Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne)

Born in Vitré in 1836, painter Tancrède Abraham spent his youth in Mayenne, depicting it in his engravings. He also directed the Château-Gontier museum.

Born in Vitré (Ille-et-Vilaine) in 1836, Tancrède Abraham spent his youth in Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne. Very early on, he discovered a taste for the fine arts and painting. A pupil of Jules Noêl, he trained in Paris, where he first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in 1863.

A landscape painter, it was mainly through engraving that he made his name. "Brittany and Mayenne are his favorite themes.
His work as an aquaforist is abundant. More than 50 plates were exhibited by him at the Salons from 1864 to 1888.

His taste for Mayenne is also underlined in Abbé Angot's Dictionary, which states: "The artist also wanted to illustrate his adopted homeland with a series of views, all the better chosen and rendered as he had, at his leisure and in detail, since childhood, visited all the sites he was to reproduce."
    Museum Director

In 1872, he published "Château-Gontier et ses environs", a collection of some thirty etchings (an engraving process), featuring well-known sites in the town: Saint-Jean, Saint-Rémy, the Jardin du Bout du monde. "The small town was a favorite of the man who honored it, and whose studio was almost as often occupied within its walls as in the capital," adds Abbé Angot. He was also
prolific in the Maine-et-Loire region. He was exhibited in Angers, Rennes, Laval and Château-Gontier.
But he also made a name for himself as director of the Château-Gontier museum. "He installed the collections in the Hôtel Fouquet in 1868, drew up an inventory and published the first catalog in 1876", explains the Archives Départementales. He also managed the library. He died in Paris on April 24, 1895, aged 59.
