A self-taught artist, Guercin (1591-1666), whose real name was Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, began his training with painters from his hometown, Cento. He then continued his studies in Bologna, where he had access to the works and artistic environment of the Carracci. His career led him to work successively in Venice, Rome and Bologna, producing a prolific body of work that can be found today in numerous museums around the world as well as in churches in Italy.
