These two watercolor-enhanced copper engravings of "Le grand Paon bleu de Cayenne" and "Le Festonné de la Guadeloupe" were designed and engraved by Martinet.
Second half of the 18th century. François-Nicolas Martinet (1731-1800) trained as an engineer and draftsman. At first, engraving was a secondary profession, but his popularity led him to make it his main activity. He engraved a large number of natural history books. He engraved bird illustrations for the most influential French ornithologists of the 18th century. In particular, he contributed to Buffon's Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roy, engraving the 1,008 illustrations in the 9 volumes devoted to birds, produced between 1770 and 1783. The butterfly plates are part of the history of birds. He probably died in the late 1790s.
