- 2021 year of Napoleon -
Interesting engraving depicting Prince Eugène de Beauharnais weeping at the tomb of his mother, Empress Josephine. Entitled Family Piety, it is a seditious Restoration-era engraving celebrating the glory of the Empire. It is presented in its original frame.
Eugène Rose de Beauharnais (1781-1824) was one of Napoleon's most glorious and loyal generals. The son of Empress Eugénie, he was the adopted son of Napoleon I and heir to the throne until the birth of the King of Rome. A member of the French imperial family, with the titles of Imperial Highness, Viceroy of Italy, Prince of Venice, Grand Duke of Frankfurt, Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichstätt. He was also one of Napoleon's most talented subordinates, who made him general-in-chief. He commanded the IV Corps during the Russian campaign. In the winter of 1812-1813, after Napoleon's departure for Paris and Murat's flight, Prince Eugène skilfully and strategically led the remnants of the Grande Armée to join up with the new troops in Saxony, despite the attempts of the Russians and their new Prussian allies to annihilate them.
A fine historical souvenir, especially in the bicentenary year of the Emperor's death.
To "keep the family together", we also present engravings of Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte. (see our other items)
