I'm selling this delightful pair of large color optical views from the 18th century, circa 1740, depicting views of the city of Rome, including such iconic landmarks as the Trevi Fountain and the Castel St. Angelo, the former papal residence. The first features a fine view of the famous Trevi Fountain, a Baroque masterpiece and one of Rome's cultural landmarks. In the lower part of the picture, you can see members of the Roman aristocracy in court dress in front of the fountain, or in the beautiful carriages in the two lower corners.
The second optical view shows the famous Castel St. Angelo, the Elian Bridge and the ancient city walls. There's also a whole group of sailing boats on the Tiber, and in the background of the composition, St. Peter's Basilica, the Papal stronghold!
Both works were printed by the two leading Parisian printers of the mid-18th century: Dumont rue St Martin and Basset rue St Jacques. Also noteworthy are the high quality of the compositions, the mastery of perspective and the beautiful acid colors.
(Minor wear and tear noted: foxing and small traces of dampness).
Dimensions optical view Trevi fountain: 35 cm high x 50.5 cm wide
