Lucien Marcelin Gautier is a French engraver, etcher, draftsman, illustrator and painter. He was born in Aix-en-Provence on January 10, 1850 and died at the age of 75 in his hometown on March 29, 1925.
He began his artistic career in Aix-en-Provence as a pupil of Gilbert and Marius Reinaud, then he became a pupil of Léon Gaucherel in Paris.
Lucien Marcelin Gautier, also called Lucien Gautier, is mainly known for his views of major European cities such as Paris, Venice, Rome and London, but also his more intimate views of the daily life of Parisians. His works are mainly made with etching, a process of intaglio engraving on a metal plate using a chemical mordant, or acid. Originally, etching referred to nitric acid. The artist using this method is called an aquafortist.
He began to produce views of Marseille and its surroundings in 1875, it was the start of his artistic career. He continued it by settling in Paris in 1883. In this city, he obtained a post at the prefecture of Paris where he organized a photographic service. During this same period, he illustrated with 10 of his engravings, made between 1880 and 1883, the book by Campeaux and Adam "Paris Picturesque", printed in 1883. This publication gave him a strong reputation as a street engraver.
In addition to being a recognized street engraver, Lucien Marcelin Gautier was an illustrator for the magazine l'Art, from 1881 to 1886. During this period, he exhibited his etched works at the Salon des artistes français in Paris. from 1880 to 1925.
During all his experiences, Lucien Gautier traveled to Italy and Scotland, whose landscapes and charming life provided him with great inspiration. Upon his return in 1884, he exhibited at the Salon two works inspired by his travels: The Forum in Rome and Lake Lhomond in Scotland. These two works earned him an honorable mention.
Indeed, Lucien Marcelin Gautier had the honor of receiving a large number of awards for his engravings of interpretations. Among others, in 1894, he received a 3rd class medal for his reproduction of Bergerie after Charles Jacques. In 1898 he obtained another second-class one for La Drague du pont Louis-Philippe in Paris. Then in 1912, he was rewarded with a 1st class medal for his engraving of Le Passeur after Corot and Gothic Vision, triptych.
In addition to being an artist recognized by his medals, Lucien Marcelin Gautier received quite large commissions, such as my commission from the French State for the engraving of La Bataille de Hondschoote based on the work of Jules Dupré.
His works are still sold in art markets with sale prices ranging from $22 to over $5,000. Since 2015, the record for the highest sale price for his works at an auction is $6,250 for his work Three Views of Notre Dame. This sale took place in New York in 2020.
