This is a very fine reprint from the Shōwa era, produced according to traditional Japanese printmaking methods, in the art of ukiyo-e. It's always very pleasant to feel the relief of the wooden ink pads as you pass your hand over this print, and photo 5 aims to show this relief and the quality of the washi paper used.

On Atagoshita and Yabu Street:
Our print highlights the snow that dominates the entire scene. It takes its name from the Atagoshita district, which derives its name from its proximity to Mount Atago. This district is home to several feudal lords' residences, such as that of the Katō clan of Minakuchi, visible in the background near the red gate of the Atagosha shrine. Also visible is the residence of the Hijikata clan of Komono, in Mie prefecture, represented by a long building on the left. To the right of the canal, in the lower corner, Yabukōji Street is suggested by an imposing bamboo cane, its branches bowing under the snow, occupying a significant part of the sky where a few sparrows flit about. Bamboo and sparrows symbolize friendship, gentleness and the promise of happiness, respectively. In this work, the coldness of winter is softened by vivid color contrasts: the deep blue of the canal and the green of the bamboo set off the red, white and light-blue hues of the sky.
