These two engravings are inspired by a comedy by Jacques-Marie Boutet de Monvet, "Sargines or the Student of Love", written in 1785.
This story of chivalry takes place under Philippe Auguste: Sargines is the son of a knight living in idleness and ignorance, despised for this by his father and his subordinates. His meeting and his love for Sophie de Villehardouin, as well as the trust that King Philippe Auguste places in him and which he shows by giving him his sword, will transform him into a hero.
