Engraving signed Jan Muller* depicting the biblical scene of Cain killing his brother Abel, just before he strikes him; in the background Cain walks away, driven from the Garden of Eden, after a lost composition by the Dutch artist Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638), edited by Harmen Jansz. Muller (ca. 1540-1617), circa 1589 late 16th century.
This engraving is in good condition, very fine quality. Signed at the bottom (and annotated on the back). This engraving is also in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum (New-York) and the National Gallery of Art (Washington DC).

* Jan Harmensz. Muller (1571-1628, Amsterdam)
was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver of the Golden Age. His father was a printer, publisher and engraver. It was with him that Jan H. Muller learned engraving. Pupil of Hendrick Goltzius. He travels to Italy and on his return takes over his father's workshop. He dies in 1628. Jan H. Muller is renowned for his drawings and paintings of mythological and biblical figures.
