Drawing by André Dutertre 1753 - 1842
The Egyptian expedition was decided at the beginning of March 1798 and entrusted to Bonaparte. Dutertre was lucky enough to be hired as a member of the Commission des Sciences et des Arts as a draftsman. He began to enrich his portfolio from the start of the trip, sketching the portraits of his companions in adventure and leaving some drawings of the first stopover in Malta.
His activities in Egypt were many and varied. Of course, Dutertre draws, that is his major goal: to gather the most complete documentation possible on all the facets of Egypt he crosses. But he participated in the sessions of the Institute of Egypt of which he was a member, he took part in various commissions of inquiry on very varied subjects: he had to deal as well with installing a theater in Cairo as with report on the Raouda Island nilometer. He set out to explore for the city of Suez then went up the Nile to Aswan… Like the majority of scholars, he did not return to France until the autumn of 1801.
