This beautiful etching by artist Knut Tiberg, born in 1938 in Moss, Norway, and died in 2015 in Tjör, Sweden, called the Clown in general, was named in French by the artist himself: "Fancioulle", not really a Clown but rather the Prince's Jester. The Artist thus refers to Beaudelaire and his little prose poems, Paradis Artificiels 1869, and more precisely to the poem "Une mort héroïque" ("A heroic death"). Beaudelaire invents the following narrative: A Prince of great aesthetic sensitivity has his jester and favorite "Fancioulle", whom he himself has condemned to death for his part in a plot against him, play before him and in public one last time. He wears a large, tall hat and gives himself over to pantomime, the acid blue colors of the stage backdrop highlighting the character's expressive portrayal.
