the capture of the Smala of Abd el Kader
Nice large engraving on vellum paper after a work by Joseph Louis Hippolyte Bellangé (1800-1866) from 1847.
Bellangé entered Gros's studio at a very young age, where he formed an intimate friendship with Charlet. He began at the Paris Salon as a painter of battles. This scene illustrates one of the phases of the conquest of Algeria, the conquest of the smala of Abd-el-Kader, which preceded the surrender of Abd-el-Kader.
Etching edited by Goupil, originally colored in watercolor by the master colourist of Goupil workshop.
