Augustin de Saint-Aubin (1736-1807) belonged to an important family of French draftsmen and engravers. He received his first lessons from his brother Gabriel-Jacques. A pupil of Etienne Fessard and Laurent Cars, he quickly excelled in drawing and engraving. Introduced by Charles-Nicolas Cochin fils, Augustin de Saint-Aubin was admitted to the Académie Royale in 1771, but later failed to submit one of the pieces required for admission. A portraitist as well as a history painter and illustrator, he was appointed Graveur de la Bibliothèque du Roi in 1777. He died in Paris in 1807.
By contrast, we know virtually nothing about the engraver, whose biographies show him to have been born in Paris in 1736 and to have died in Rochefort in 1763. The same is true of his work, which seems to be limited to well-known prints based on two drawings by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, the "Promenade des remparts de Paris" and the "Tableau des Portraits à la mode", both of which appeared in the Mercure of July 1761.
In the case of the "Tableau", there are a large number of reproductions of this pleasant genre scene. At least two of them are in the possession of the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
