From the series of sixty-nine views of the Kiso Kaidō:
The 69 Stages of the Kiso Kaidō are a collection of ukiyo-e prints designed by Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen between 1834 and 1842. These prints illustrate the complete course of the major Kiso Kaidō route, stretching from Edo (now Tōkyō), where the shogun lived, to Kyōto, the emperor's residence.
This collection comprises a total of 71 horizontal ōban prints. There are 69 main stations, with the starting point at Nihonbashi in Edo and another print dedicated to Nakatsugawa-juku, plus a title page.
Generally, the route is often called "Nakasendō", hence the occasional mention of the 69 Nakasendō stations. These prints are a continuation of Hiroshige's series, which depicted the 53 stages of the Tōkaidō, Japan's most famous road.
In this production, Eisen contributed 23 stations, including Nihonbashi, while Hiroshige created the other 47 prints in the Kiso Kaidō series.
