WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE NEAR SAINTE VICTOIRE MOUNTAIN
Original pencil drawing by
Pierre LETUAIRE (1798-1884)
Pierre Letuaire was born in Toulon on August 6, 1798.
He became a friend of a pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet, the Marquis de Clinchamp, who had just opened Toulon's first painting studio.
In 1823, he succeeded Laurent Julien as drawing teacher at the Collège de Toulon, a position he held until 1867.
He became a member of the Académie du Var in 1835. That same year, he innovated by creating free drawing courses, including industrial drawing courses open to masons, carpenters and other professionals. It was for this voluntary activity that he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur by Napoleon III during his second visit to Toulon in 1860.
In 1837, he followed the Constantine expedition, bringing back views and portraits.
In 1840, he exhibited his large-scale composition Un épisode de l'armée d'Algérie (An episode in the Algerian army; a Bedouin attack in a pass) in Toulon.
In 1844, Pierre Letuaire became press correspondent for the magazine L'Illustration, a position he held for a quarter of a century. He contributed illustrations to several newspapers and magazines, including Le Mistral, La Provence artistique et pittoresque and Le Monde illustré.
In 1867, he was awarded the Palmes académiques when he left the lycée in Toulon, and the following year he was appointed town councillor.
