Paul Jouve was a French illustrator and sculptor, passionate about animals from a young age, which he discovered at the Natural History Museum and in Parisian zoos. He is the most famous animal painter of the Art Deco period.

In 1931, Paul Jouve embarked from Bordeaux for Africa. He traveled to Dakar and then journeyed through Senegal, Sudan, Niger, and Dahomey. During this trip, he created numerous drawings and paintings of camel riders and Tuaregs. This drawing originates from that voyage. Upon returning to France, he produced many lithographs and compositions inspired by his travel notes and sketches. Paul Jouve’s original paintings and drawings are rare and highly sought after.
