Annotated on the mount by the artist
This drawing was made by Eugène Courboin for the illustrated edition of Jean Richepin's Chanson des Gueux, published in Paris by Maurice Dreyfous, in 1881 (according to the dictionary of illustrators, 1800-1914), then in 1883. Eugène Courboin has thus worked on the production of a series of engravings, seven in number, illustrating the collection of poems.
This unpublished drawing is preparatory to one of the seven engravings of the book and illustrates the epilogue of the book: La Fin des Gueux. At the bottom right, Eugène Courboin also wrote the following verse, evocative of the poem: "What is this glow that tears the dark?". These drawings perfectly reflect the atmosphere of the illustrated poems and have been faithfully engraved in the collection.
