Biography
Paul Nicolas, born on May 25, 1875 in Laval-sur-Vologne (Vosges) and died on February 22, 1952 in Nancy, was a French master glassmaker.
Born on May 25, 1875 in Laval-sur-Vologne, a village in the Vosges department, he was the second son of Jean-Pierre Nicolas and Catherine Jacques. His father was steward of Count Molitor's gardens and greenhouses in Burthecourt, in occupied Lorraine.
In January 1888, the Nicolas family's life was turned upside down by the Schnæbelé affair: the German command gave French nationals residing in the annexed zone the choice of remaining German or being expelled. A notice from the president of the Metz district, dated January 4 1888, gave Jean-Pierre Nicolas two weeks from January 12 1888 to choose. The Nicolas family took with them the only belongings they could carry, as instructed by the German command, and left Burthecourt on January 20, 1888 to settle in Sainte-Anne, a district of Laxou, which they never left. Jean-Pierre Nicolas bought a plot of land and set up his own horticultural business2.
The arrival in Laxou marked the start of a new life for Émile, the eldest brother, and Paul. Émile, who had been expelled from Burthecourt, was unable to pursue his studies as he would have liked, and began working. Paul attended the Saint-Pierre school, then the École primaire supérieure. At the age of fifteen, he entered the Nancy School of Fine Arts, in the architecture section. He also began painting. He chose drawing or watercolor as his means of expression, in preference to oil. He left the École des Beaux-Arts in 1893, with his diploma (architecture section), a second mention in sketching, and 2nd prize, a small silver medal, in monument surveying.
