A fine pair of Clichy vases, known to all as late 19th century Legras glassware.
Despite the large production, they are not easy to find in pairs.
These belong to the so-called "bigarrée" series, presented in the 1889 production plates as "new shapes and colors".
All models have a name.
This is the "Czarine" model, found in a commercial plate of the "Verrerie et Cristalleries de Saint Denis" under reference 3135.
This model, with its variegated pink-blue-white base, has a coarsely ribbed body with horizontal lines.
The vases were blown in a mold, so the body is always exactly the same, but conversely, the corrugated neck was pinched, so it's always different.
In passing, we'd like to thank the authors of the excellent book "François Théodore Legras, Verrerie artistique et populaire française": Marie-France and Jean-François MICHEL, Dominique and Jean VITRAT. Their book is magnificent and superbly documented. Every lover of fine glassware and Legras should own it.
Each vase is photographed in profile, with a 1/4 turn to show the variegated effect produced by the mix of colors that results from pure chance.
This is the charm of all Clichy production: it's always the same, but never the same!
Let's face it, these century-old pieces have an incredible modernity that will brighten up any interior.
