Pedestal table
Mahogany and walnut
Dimensions: D. 92 ; H. 72 (cm.)
France or Great Britain last third of the 18th century
Tripod pedestal table supporting a cylindrical shaft decorated with rings. Circular top. Iron latch system.
A fine piece of English-inspired furniture. This is an interesting example of "Anglomania" at the end of the 18th century: it is either an import or a reworking executed in France. The most famous cabinetmaker to produce this type of pedestal table was Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas.
Anglomania
- so called by its detractors - first manifested itself in continental Europe in the aftermath of the Seven Years' War, for English or British customs such as horse clubs and races, in which the Comte d'Artois took a great interest, clothing fashions (the frock coat) and gastronomy (punch), and decorative arts (English gardens).
Condition report: very good condition, waxed varnish, some very slight traces of wear. Period metal reinforcements on underside.
