Music cabinet in stained beech, attributed to Gabriel Viardot (1830 - 1904). This Parisian cabinetmaker, specialized in the production of Japanese furniture, will see his talent rewarded - among others - by a Legion of Honor in 1885.
It is composed in the upper part of an openwork panel, carved with decorations characteristic of Asian Art, such as an imaginary Reptilian creature and a grouping of flowers. This bottom also serves as a support for a small shelf, whose sides have been carved in opposition to each other.
Underneath, this piece of furniture offers two intermediate trays, connected to each other by overhanging and convex uprights. Those of the front, in angles, are decorated with winged animals in Bronze. The upper edges of this open niche are embellished with openwork beechwood galleries.
The lower part of this piece of furniture is made of four music racks, compartments initially conceived to serve as storage for music scores. The sides of this lower part are partially closed by cut-out panels, forming Oriental Decorations.
The Artist Viardot has imagined here a light piece of furniture, with reasonable dimensions, and which one will appreciate the Exoticism.
