Very fine set comprising a Mazarin-style desk and a working cabinet. These walnut pieces are richly carved, gilded and painted in the Italian Renaissance style.
The desk features a framed top with a molded gilded surround. In the center, the desk features original wine-red leather with gilded vignette. On the left-hand side, a sliding shelf enlarges the work surface. The edge of the desk features three drawers sculpted in relief with foliage and arabesques. The fronts are recessed, with gilded moldings following the contours of the drawers. On the sides, we also see higher drawers with different fronts, carved in relief with arabesques on a granite background and surrounded by painted moldings. This drawer configuration is reminiscent of the spirit of Mazarin desks, as are the legs joined by an X-shaped brace. Indeed, this desk rests on eight legs sculpted with rosettes and embellished with grotesque faces at the top. On each side, the four legs feature curved braces supporting a frame with painted scrolls to great effect. The legs end in gilded lion paws.
The carved and painted walnut cabinet features four doors, an open space and drawers. The central doors are made of wine-colored recessed sheet metal, painted with putti, covered with crackled varnish and surrounded by moldings. The lock and chiselled key are functional. On either side of the cabinet are taller, narrower doors. They feature panels carved in relief and painted with arabesques and volutes. The lower part of the cabinet features drawers with molded fronts and wooden pull knobs. The cabinet stands on eight legs. The front legs end in gilded lion paws. The uprights are carved with rosettes and decorated with grotesque faces at the top. The molded and painted cornice is topped by slender spinning tops and a wooden element painted with a leafy frieze.
