Léonard Boudin (1735-1804), Cabinetmaker. Paris. Mastered March 4, 1761. He ran a cabinetmaking store and sent furniture to the provinces and abroad. A simple worker, Léonard Boudin was earning a meager living when cabinetmaker Migeon asked him to make furniture for one of his clients, using flowery marquetry and Chinese-style varnish. Having amassed a little money in this way, he passed and obtained his master's degree in 1761 and set up his workshop on rue Traversiére. From 1870 onwards, he received commissions from a number of renowned dealers, including Louis Moreau and Gerard Peridiez, and quickly acquired a high reputation. He made a name for himself above all with his highly varied marquetry, finely crafted to perfection. In 1772, keeping his own workshop, he opened a sales store on rue Fromenteau, which he moved to the Saint-germain-l'Auxerrois cloister in 1777. As orders flooded in, he enlisted the help of other cabinetmakers and became one of Paris's leading merchants. Gradually, Boudin abandoned his own creations, offering his customers only the works of his colleagues, hence the double stamp found on many of his pieces. Boudin's legacy includes furniture in the Louis XIV, Transtion and Louis XVI styles, all of which are still of excellent workmanship and, with their veneers and marquetry, bear the distinctive "Boudin style" hallmarks.
Louis XVI period, circa 1780, 18th century.
