GUILLAUME KEMP, carpenter-cabinetmaker. Paris. Master October 3, 1764. Of German origin.
In 1757, when he married the daughter of Brice Péridiez, this cabinetmaker from Bonn, Germany, had been working for some time in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. He remained there until the Revolution, in his workshop on rue de la Roquette. Its production essentially belongs to the Transition and Louis XVI styles. Although he sometimes uses sheet veneers, including mahogany, he mainly specializes in marquetry. Marquetry of regular geometric patterns - chevrons, rosettes, circles, grids - and more bouquets and baskets of flowers, trophies, architecture with statues and characters, often circumscribed in oval medallions. To Beneman, charged with creating a sumptuous desk for the cabinet of Louis XVI in Versailles, Kemp delivered in 1786 eight panels of colored wood marquetry representing flowers and fruits based on the cartoons of the painter Gérard Van Spaendonck. We find his stamp on Transition chests of drawers, with or without projection, Louis XVI chests of drawers, secretaries, corner cabinets, Transition or Louis XVI roll-top desks, all of classic lines but well proportioned and carefully manufactured. Let us cite a Transition chest of drawers without projection inlaid with a basket of flowers in a medallion on a quatrefoil trellis background, sold in Monaco on June 14, 1981 (former collection of Mentmore Castle).
