Charles-Joseph Lemarchand (1759-1820).

A native of Dieppe, Charles-Joseph Lemarchand settled in rue des Tournelles until he obtained his master's degree in 1789. He then settled in rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine where he remained until 1807, and ended his career in rue du Pas-de-la-Mule. Supplier of the furniture storage of the Crown, he delivered in 1791, eighteen chests of drawers in mahogany intended for the Château de Saint-Cloud. Under the Empire he will work for Napoleon and his imperial castles. We can mention in particular a very beautiful console supported by claws of gilded wood, delivered to the Château de Compiègne.
The vast majority of Charles-Joseph Lemarchand's furniture is in the Louis XVI-Directoire style, most of it executed in mahogany wood, with simple shapes, without decoration, except for thin copper or brass rods. After his death his son Louis-Edouard will take over the workshop and continue his father's activity, as supplier to the Crown, under Charles X and Louis Philippe.

Furniture by Charles Joseph Lemarchand is kept, among other places, at Malmaison, the Château de Fontainebleau, the Mobilier National and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
