Pierre Garnier, Louis XVI period stamped mahogany coffee table,

    circa 1780

Sumptuous Louis XVI period Salon Table, in mahogany and mahogany veneer, resting on Petis Pieds Fuselés joined by a Tablette d'Entretoise.

This Rectangular-shaped Table opens with Three Drawers on the Front, and is topped with a Grey Veined White Marble Top encircled by an Openwork Gilded Bronze Gallery. Its Straight Fluted Mounts rest on evenly fluted Columns. Beautiful ornamentation in gilded bronze such as clogs, rings, lock escutcheons and gallery. Beautiful wood species. Beautiful patina. This table is stamped on its front crosspiece with Pierre Garnier.

Refined and elegant furniture of the highest quality, stamped by the famous and renowned Parisian Master Cabinet Maker, Pierre Garnier (circa 1726-1800), this beautifully proportioned table combines practical utility with its small drawers for storage, and can also be used to display objets d'art and light fittings. A quality piece embodying the refinement and elegance of French furniture from the Louis XVI period.

Pierre Garnier (circa 1726-1800) ,Cabinetmaker, Maîtrise obtained December 31, 1742: Pierre Garnier was one of the greatest cabinetmakers of his century. Of Parisian origin, son of master cabinetmaker Francois Garnier and Françoise Courant, Pierre Garnier was admitted to the Maîtrise in 1742. As a member of the carpenter-cabinetmaker jury, his father was elected to the position of juror - a position he held until 1744. Not wanting to follow in his father's footsteps, Garnier moved from Faubourg Saint-Antoine to rue Neuve-des-Petits-Champs, near Place Vendôme. In 1754, he married Madeleine-Antoinette Oger, daughter of a merchant and manufacturer of gold and silver braids. A renowned cabinetmaker, his clientele was undoubtedly made up of merchants such as Léonard Boudin, but above all of the kingdom's great wealthy, to whom he delivered numerous commissions. Among them, Louis Georges Erasme, Maréchal de France, the Duchesse de Mazarin and the Marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame de Pompadour, were the most regular customers. The invaluable correspondence between the two men, stemming from the numerous commissions they carried out for him, gives us a better grasp of the cabinetmaker's character traits, summed up in the formula used to define the new jurors of the carpenter-cabinetmaker jury as "probity, conduct and recognized ability".
Although Garnier is less well known than his colleagues Oeben and Riesner, he is nonetheless one of the greatest promoters and most original masters of the "à la grecque" style, which is today more widely incorporated into the Louis XVI style. The first years of his career were marked by the rocaille style, then in vogue. He was already producing high-quality pieces such as commodes in diamond marquetry, rosewood and amaranth, as well as refined secretaries and corner cabinets inlaid with precious woods or adorned with Chinese-style varnish. Garnier's style is dominated by geometrical marquetry, rhombuses, crosses and variously arranged leaf veneers. These veneers are sometimes compartmentalized by highly sinuous, intertwined frames. He also produced some furniture in the Transition style, but it was with the arrival of Neoclassicism that Garnier made the greatest and most significant contribution to his career, a period during which he asserted his style and produced highly distinctive works. This furniture is characteristic of the "Greek" style, with its architectural forms and rich decorations, partly influenced by the Louis XIV style. In addition to this furniture, Garnier also produced low bookcases, secretaries with bronze-framed veneers or lacquers, and a series of flat desks (furniture and 18th-century cabinetmakers).

Parisian Louis XVI period, 18th century, circa 1780.
